SPIRITUAL AWAKENING THROUGH FASTING AND PRAYER
A Burden to Pray for a Nation
There is a problem which most of us have to confront whenever seasons of fasting and prayer take place. It is difficult to believe that we can make much of a difference through our prayers, and the disposition of many is to feel that seasons of fasting and prayer are among the following:
1. A religious exercise.
2. A superstitious attempt at changing God's mind.
3. A sentimental good feeling.
But let's face it: prayer always taxes faith! In prayer we are always brought face to face with ultimate questions: are we seriously interested in getting down to the basics of praying? The facts of God's Word indicate such fasting and prayer is not only valid, but that it is...
1. The command of God.
2. The promise of the Word
3. The Holy Spirit who assists intercessors.
THE COMMAND OF GOD TO PRAY FOR NATIONS
The specific directives of I Timothy 2:1-3 and Psalm 2:8 are sufficient to demonstrate that a believer's commitment to prayer at a national and international level comes from the heart and mind of God. If God commands such prayer, believe this: He will answer our prayer. Our Lord will move with power and force. He requires the prayer partnership, not because of His reluctance, but because He desires us to come into accordance with His will and purpose.
THE PROMISE OF THE WORLD
No passage of God's Word is more full with promises than II Chronicles 7:14-16. In short, the Lord says no nation is beyond saving, healing, restoring, and delivering... IF HIS PEOPLE WILL PRAY.
THE HOLY SPIRIT ASSISTS INTERCESSORS
It's a simple fact that we are all learning how to pray and at times we just dont know what to say. But the Spirit-filled believer is promised help in Romans 8:26, 27. Such assistance is for those who are ready to pray with a desire to see things change. Begin by allowing yourself to be stirred with a need: for our presidential elections, for positions in federal, state, and local government. Pray for decisions that will be made internationally; pray for economic decisions and social decay. As we see the news of today, let us turn our confusion and worry to concentrated prayer. And let the Holy Spirit help you take it from there. Make prayer your priority.
